Half a dozen stores on Liberty Avenue at 110th Street and as many as 10 apartments above them were completely destroyed. The cause of the seven-alarm blaze, which is believed to have begun in a Guyanese grocery store, was not known, officials say.
The Fire Department said more than 200 firefighters came out to battle the fire. Five people, including two firefighters, had minor injuries.
The buildings are located directly under the elevated section of the A train. Subway service to and from the Rockaways was halted Saturday night and through much of Sunday.
